The content of my ePortfolio for MHST 631 – Health Promotion I, showcases my growing understanding of health promotion and its critical role in improving individual and community well-being. A key strength is its focus on addressing systemic barriers to achieve health equity. I am particularly interested in exploring the accessibility challenges that seniors face in attending pulmonary rehabilitation programs, aiming to identify solutions that enhance access and bridge this gap.
Reflecting on concepts such as the Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) framework has been particularly influential in shaping my perspective on health promotion. This framework aligns with my focus on addressing systemic barriers and emphasizes the broader societal, economic, and environmental factors that influence health outcomes. I have demonstrated a strong commitment to integrating equity, diversity, and inclusion into health promotion strategies. Additionally, my ability to connect theory to practice, such as recognizing biases in patient care and their impact on access to services, highlights my efforts to align professional actions with broader health promotion goals.
One limitation of my understanding of conceptual frameworks is my difficulty in connecting abstract theories, such as health behavior models, to practical, real-world applications. While I’ve gained foundational knowledge, I sometimes struggle to adapt these frameworks to address diverse and complex patient needs or global health challenges. I also recognize that reconciling theoretical constructs with lived realities has been challenging, which has occasionally affected my engagement with course materials. In MHST 632, I hope to deepen my understanding of conceptual frameworks and learn how to operationalize them effectively in planning, implementing, and evaluating health promotion initiatives. Specifically, I aim to develop strategies that address the unique barriers seniors with COPD face in accessing pulmonary rehabilitation programs.
Burning Questions for MHST 632
How can I design culturally responsive and inclusive health promotion interventions to effectively address systemic inequities, particularly for seniors with COPD?
What tools and strategies can I use to evaluate the long-term impact of health promotion actions aimed at improving access to pulmonary rehabilitation for underserved populations?
How can I effectively prioritize strategies when making decisions in health promotion? Would adopting an “agile” approach be beneficial, considering that expecting all aspects of health promotion to occur simultaneously may not be realistic?
By addressing these questions, I aim to strengthen my ability to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate health promotion initiatives that create meaningful and lasting improvements in health outcomes, specifically targeting the accessibility challenges faced by seniors in attending pulmonary rehabilitation.
