Heat Health Prevention Measures and Adaptation in Older Populations—A Systematic Review
This study implemented the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion to evaluate existing heatwave prevention measures for older adults. They analyzed published research through the lens of the Charter's five action areas:
Build Healthy Public Policy: This area examines government initiatives. The study assessed policies promoting heat awareness and access to cooling centers for older adults.
Create Supportive Environments: This examines community-level interventions. Researchers looked at factors like safe housing with proper ventilation and access to green spaces that can provide cooling effects.
Strengthen Community Action: This area focuses on community engagement. The study analyzed initiatives encouraging neighbours and social services to check-in on older adults during heat waves.
Develop Personal Skills: This area emphasizes individual knowledge and behaviours. Researchers assessed educational programs that teach older adults to stay cool and hydrated during hot weather.
Reorient Health Services: This area focuses on healthcare professionals' roles. The study evaluated how well healthcare providers inform older adults about heat risks and recommend appropriate preventative measures.
The study analyzed these areas to identify gaps between recommended heatwave strategies and what older adults are currently experiencing. It highlighted the need for more proactive outreach and education from healthcare professionals and policymakers.
